I love getting to photograph newborn sessions in a studio! I use Third Daughter Studio for my Chattanooga Newborn photography sessions, which is a beautiful natural light studio. Here are some helpful tips if you have booked a studio session with me:
1. Book Early
Newborn sessions are best scheduled in advance, ideally during the second trimester. This ensures availability around your baby’s birth.
2. Choose the Right Time
While many newborn sessions are done within the first 7–14 days of life, as babies are generally sleepier and more flexible during this time, the best time is when you and baby are feeling ready.
3. Bring Baby Hungry
Feed your baby right before the session or bring extra milk/formula for a feeding during the session. A well-fed baby is more likely to sleep through the photoshoot, making it easier to capture those peaceful moments.
4. Keep Baby in Simple Clothes
Dress your baby in a simple, loose onesie or a diaper that’s easy to remove. This helps avoid any marks or indentations on the skin that could show up in the photos.
5. Pack Essentials for Comfort
Bring a diaper bag with essentials like diapers, wipes, extra pacifiers, swaddles, and a favorite blanket or comfort item. A change of clothes for the baby is always a good idea too.
6. Prepare for Temperature Control
Studios are usually kept warm to help keep the baby comfortable during the shoot (especially for those adorable naked shots). Dress yourself lightly, as you may get warm, but you can also bring layers just in case.
7. Relax and Enjoy
Keep in mind that the session is about capturing the precious moments with your newborn, and it might take some time. Babies may need breaks for feeding, soothing, or changing, and that’s completely normal.
8. Consider Outfit Choices
Choose simple, neutral-colored outfits. Avoid bright patterns or logos, which can draw attention away from the baby. A soft, classic look usually works best.
9. Prepare Older Siblings (If Applicable)
If older siblings will be included in the session, talk to them beforehand about the process. Let them know they’ll get to hold their baby brother or sister, and there will be a chance for sibling shots as well. This can help them feel included and more cooperative.
By being well-prepared, you’ll help ensure that your newborn’s studio session goes smoothly and that you get beautiful, timeless photos to cherish forever.
Meaningful portraits you will cherish for a lifetime.
